The Puttalam Elephants

This print has been taken from a private commission in 1984 for a Corsair pilot stationed at HMS Rajaliya in 1942.
HMS Rajaliya was an airstrip built in the jungle at Puttalam in Ceylon and was used by F4U Corsairs to help repel a large Japanese invasion attempt.
When the aircraft landed in the damp conditions, they would sometimes slither off the metal tracking and get stuck in the waterlogged ground. That was when the Puttalam elephants came to their rescue.
